From Keralakoumudi

Reports:

Natural rubber prices fall sharply as oversupply looms

LONDON—Natural rubber prices have fallen sharply across key Far East markets the past week, as the three main producer nations ended a three-month curb on NR exports on March 31.
Weakening demand and trade tensions between China and the U.S. also were cited by traders as contributing factors to a wave of declines on NR markets.
Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, members of the International Tripartite Council (ITRC) cut natural rubber exports by 350,000 metric tons for the first three months of the year in an attempt to help improve NR prices.
On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, spot prices for RU1805— the most heavily traded NR future — stood at $1,790 per metric ton on March 30, down 13 percent from the level noted on Feb. 28.
In Tokyo, TOCOM back-month prices for RSS3 materials closed at about $1.68 per kilogram on March 28, around 7 percent lower than the end-of-February level.
Thailand, which had seen positive trends in recent months—due to the exports cuts and wintering season—also saw sharp drops amid the increasing supply prospects.
Spot prices for RSS1 grades in Bangkok stood at $173.55 per 100 kilos on March 29 March, a 4.3 percent drop from Feb. 28.
The impact of NR prices on the global tire market will be among the issues discussed and debated at Future Tire Conference 2018, taking place May 30-31 during the Tire Cologne international trade fair in Cologne, Germany

Market Reports:

TOCOM ends down on strong yen, weak Shanghai
TOKYO : Benchmark Tokyo rubber futures ended down 1.7% on Friday, coming under pressure from a stronger yen and weak Shanghai futures, amid concerns over rising stockpiles.
Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) futures, which set the tone for rubber prices in Southeast Asia, have been getting little support from the ongoing curbs in exports by a group of three of the world’s top natural rubber producers, as stockpiles in Japan climbed to a more than three-year high.
The dollar fell against the yen on Friday, after a report that U.S. President Donald Trump would remove his national security adviser added to concerns about recent White House personnel changes and what that meant for policy.
A stronger Japanese currency makes yen-denominated assets less affordable when purchased in other currencies.
The Tokyo Commodity Exchange rubber contract for August delivery finished 3.4 yen lower at 191.8 yen (US$1.82) per kg. For the week, it gained 1.1%.
“Shanghai futures also face a similar situation as stocks pile up, in a trend that highlights slack demand,” said a Japanese trading source.
Rubber inventories in warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose 0.1% from last Friday, the exchange said on Friday.
The most active rubber contract on the Shanghai futures exchange for May delivery fell 200 yuan to finish at 12,580 yuan (US$1,989) per tonne.
The front-month rubber contract on Singapore’s SICOM exchange for April delivery last traded at 145.1 U.S. cents per kg, down 1.4 cents.

Rubber Rate Today In Kerala and Tripura markets

Markets In Kerala and Tripura will be down

Rubber rate today increased due to the demand from tire companies. Rubber ISS grade in Kochi market improved  by RS. 250 per quintal and rubber RSS4 grade increased by Rs. 200 per quintal. Initially Tire companies had demanded Rs 118 per kilogram and they were forced to raise price to Rs 125 in Kottayam Rubber Market today.

Suppliers supplying rubber to tire companies bought 1500 tones of rubber over the weekend. Small tire companies also bought 500 tones of rubber. In the international market, the price of rubber in Bangkok fell by two rupees, while in China and Tokyo markets rubber rate today remained unchanged.

In China spot market rubber rate today  is Rs. 110 per kg and in Tokyo it is Rs.109 per kg. The decline in international prices will be lead to slow demand in domestic market in coming days. Merchants say that the middlemen among the farmers are holding the rubber without selling it expecting  the higher price. Farmers are hoping that prices will go up in the coming days when production is down.

Benchmark Tokyo Rubber Futures erased earlier gains and hit a one-week low.

Concerns about global trade are being considered on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) futures as US President Donald Trump’s 25% steel import duty and 10% tariff on aluminum

As the global economy slow down, commodities will also be affected.

Inventories in Shanghai Futures Exchange warehouses, rose 0.2% compared to last week

Rubber Market Reports
Rubber prices in decline
The price that Cambodian rubber latex fetches overseas dropped by 10 percent since the beginning of the year, a fall that officials attribute to an oversupply of the commodity in global markets and the sluggish growth of the international economy.
In January the price of Cambodian rubber overseas declined by 10 percent, going from $1,600 per ton in December to $1,444 by the end of the month.
Compared to January last year, when a ton of the commodity sold for $1,908, prices have dropped by as much as 25 percent, according to data released yesterday by the General Directorate of Rubber.
“We have noticed that the supply of rubber is still exceeding market demand. Meanwhile, the global economy, especially the United States and China, the two main markets for rubber, has not performed well economically. This has affected the price of rubber,” said Pol Sopha, director-general of the directorate.
“The price of our rubber is closely tied to the global economy too.”
In November last year Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia decided to jointly restrict the amount of rubber they supply to the international market. Mr Sopha believes the move will help the price of Cambodian rubber recover.
“With these three countries committing to reduce the supply and with the World Bank forecasting that global economic growth will increase, the price of rubber will be picking up at some point in the upcoming months,” said Mr Sopha.
In 2017, Cambodia exported more than 190,000 tonnes of rubber latex, an increase of 30 percent year-on-year, according to the directorate.
In January the kingdom exported 18,783 tonnes of rubber, 32 percent more than the same month last year. Most of it was sent to Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and China.
During a meeting in Beijing last month, Yim Chhayly, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of the Cambodian Agricultural and Rural Development Council, and Patrick Yu, chairman of Cofco – China’s largest food processor, manufacturer and trader – agreed to set up a working group in the kingdom to explore the possibilities available in the local agricultural sector, including rubber.
Cambodia has 436,340 hectares of rubber plantations, of which 170,230 hectares (39 percent) are now harvestable.
Cambodia is the sixteenth largest rubber latex producer in the world, according to Mr Sopha, who also explained that the government aims to increase production to 300,000 tonnes by 2020.

TOCOM bounces backfrom 8-mth low on higher commodities prices
• Benchmark Tokyo rubber futures rose on Thursday, bouncing back from near 8-month lows hit the previous session, on the back of higher oil and metals prices, but trades were thin as China began a week-long Lunar New Year holiday.
• Oil prices rose by around 1 percent on Thursday to extend gains from the previous session, lifted by a weak dollar and Saudi comments that it would rather see an under supplied market than end a deal with OPEC and Russia to withhold production. London copper prices on Thursday rose for a fourth session to their highest in 10 days, supported by a decline in the dollar and robust prospects for global growth. The Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) rubber contract for July delivery finished 1.7 yen higher at 186.0 yen ($1.75) per kg. It hit the lowest since June 21 of 184.1 yen the previous day.
• “Higher commodities prices offset pressure from a higher yen,” said Jiong Gu, an analyst at Yutaka Shoji Co.
• The dollar extended its losses against the yen and hit a new 15-month low on Thursday, with market participants bracing for further near-term weakness in the U.S. currency. A stronger yen makes yen-denominated assets less affordable when purchased in other currencies.
